Brandy and her husband are simply looking for a name that they can agree on, and have multiple cultures to draw from.
I am pregnant with a little girl. Our son’s name is Dante Xipil Baltier for a couple of reasons, and the circumstances around this pregnancy are making it hard for me to find a name.
When I MET my husband, one of the first things he told me was that he was going to have a boy, and he was going to be named Dante. When we found out it was a boy, the ultrasound tech was kind enough to put his name on the picture we took home. I rattled my brain for weeks, trying to find a middle name for him, when my best friend suggested I look for a name that means “fire.” Ah, my sick sense of humor couldn’t resist, and I found Xipil, which in Aztec means “noble, of fire.” So, that was easy in comparison.
I always wanted a little girl named Delphine Lucia, since my great grandmothers were Del Fina and Luz. Del Fina died on my fourth birthday, and Luz died before I was born. But Hubby shot down those names with a quickness. But it didn’t matter, since we were getting Dante.
My best friend, whose name was Christopher Sean, passed away on Halloween last year. I am hellbent and determined to honor him with this little girl for a few reasons: 1) I got pregnant because Hubby was trying to make me feel better about my loss. He’s a giver like that! <3 and 2) Had he lived long enough to settle down and get married and have kids, Chris was the kind of guy that would be lucky enough to have had 5 girls, all with him thoroughly wrapped around their fingers.
I hate religious names, but Sean sticks with me, and I want to use it. I have no problems naming a little girl “Sean” or “Shaughn,” and the last time I was lucky enough to see him, my friend Katie (Kathryn) was kind enough to take me with her to Albuquerque so we could all get together. So, naturally, I have had my heart set on Shaughn Kathryn Baltier. It was shot down. I think it may be because it doesn’t have a darn thing to do with our Hispanic heritage, like Xipil, but as much as I love and celebrate being half Mexican, I walk an old school Norse religious path, but will “settle” for something that sounds Gaelic. My love has given me almost NO input, except that he noticed on one of her ultrasounds, it looked like the outline of a wolf was there. So he looked up names that mean “wolf,” and the only one I liked was Daciana, but a good friend that is due in June is naming her little boy Dacian.
So, that’s my dilemma in the smallest nutshell I could muster. My lifelong best friend, my maternal grandmother (her mother was Luz) is named Bertha (NO!!!!!!!) and her middle name was Celia until she got married and dropped Celia in favor of her maiden name (Ibarra) as her middle name.
If you and your readers can help, I will be eternally grateful! (I sincerely HATE my name, so this has been really, really hard for me! She’s going to have to put this on resumes and college applications, and I don’t want her to go through what I’ve been through!)
Sincerely,
Brandy
Brandy, you have a lot of considerations here. First, you need to decide who is most important to honor.
Your friend Christopher Sean appears to take high priority in your mind and I love and admire that you want to honor him with this child’s name. She will always appreciate having such a special namesake. But I also think she will appreciate having a tie to her Mexican culture, like her brother has. In this way, it would be nice to pay homage to one of your family members with Delfina, Luz, Celia, or Ibarra.
I also love the story of the sweet wolf! How special would it be if she named herself? Lupe, the Spanish word for “wolf” was my first thought, and it mirrors Dante so well in sound. It would make a lovely first or middle. Guadalupe, in honor of the Virgin Mary, is a very traditional name which means “Lady of the River of Wolves.” Was it meant to be?
Ylva was another gem I found on my search for you. It is an Norse word for “she-wolf”! I love the Y initial with Dante Xipil’s X. Could it not be more perfect???
The meaning of Luz, “light”, would also be a lovely complement to big brother’s “fire.” I strongly urge your husband to allow you to take the lead naming your daughter. He decided your son’s name long before he was born, and while of course you both have to like it, I do hope he takes into account your preferences for this child. How I desire to convince him of the merits of Delphine Luz!
As for Shaughn, I think this name is a flash in the pan I’m afraid to say. I adore the meaning and how special it is to you, but I think there are better names out there for your daughter. The spelling here is bizarre and Sean is primarily a man’s name. Your friend was Christopher after all, and there are so many gorgeous feminizations of this name I urge you to consider. Many would also pay tribute to your Mexican heritage. This could be a win-win. Kathryn also has lovely significance, but it would be so special to keep the family names in the family, as it were.
We wish you all the best and can’t wait to see what you decide on.
Suggestions:
Adela- Spanish, “noble”– like Xipil
Araceli- Spanish, “altar of the sky”- could pay tribute to Christopher with the meaning
Belen- Spanish form of Bethlehem, used in Mexico as a given name.
Calixta- Spanish form of the Greek Kallistos, “most beautiful.” I love how Dante and Calixta are old world names. You also get the C for Christopher and the X from Xipil.
Celia- A great name in English and Spanish, you are so lucky to have this in your family! Also a C name for Christopher.
Cristina, Cristiana, Christabel- Lovely names that relate to your friend and also pay homage to your heritage.
Guadalupe- See above– wolf.
Ibarra- For your grandmother. This may sound odd as a first name to Spanish speakers (?), but could make a wonderful middle.
Lupe- Again, WOLF!
Nereida- Spanish, “sea sprite”, from the Greek. I’m not sure what your relationship is to the sea, but this name just jumped off the page at me.
Socorro- Spanish, “help, relief”– could represent life after Christopher’s passing.
Violeta- The violet represents love, fidelity, and modesty among other things.
Ylva- Old Norse for wolf.
Ximena- Spanish, may be a form of Simon, meaning “he has heard.”
Xochitl- Nahuatl for flower, used in Mexico.
Xiomara- Spanish, “famous in war.” A traditional X name that pairs well with Xipil.
Combinations I love for you:
Lupe Christabel
Cristiana Ylva
Ximena Christabel
Ximena Ylva
Ylva Cristina
Ylva Calixta Christiane
Readers, what names do you love for Dante Xipil’s baby sister?

What about Siobhan, which is is the female form of Sean? It would be a nice way to honor your friend. There’s also the Aztec name Xitlali or Citlali, which means “star” and is gaining popularity but still relatively unfamiliar, but would go great with Xipil. Citlali Siobhan sounds lovely.
Ylva is genius. period. I agree that you should be more front and center with this naming process. In fact, I think you should pick whatever you like! Delphine is one of my favorites, and there couldn’t be a more luxurious name than Christabel to honor your friend. I vote for Ylva Christabel Delphine, Celia Cristabel, or Calixta Christina Lovell (wolf).
Oooh, first off… Elisabeth, bravo on including that Diego Rivera painting. So pretty.
Brandy, putting the deeper considerations aside, and just saying them aloud, I LOVE Belen and Celia with your very lovely last name. Belen Baltier makes me think she’s the next Penelope Cruz. SO gorgeous.
I’m half Spanish, and dh is half Mexican- so I understand the pull to honor that heritage in a name, but for us it never seemed to make sense because his surname is very Dutch. Sadly, my parents neglected to consider that in naming my poor brother who is Jose Kessler. He chooses to go by his middle name, Garrett. I don’t blame him!
First off, Elisabeth, WOW! You rock! And Diego was an excellent touch! Frida is my hero; my kitchen is dedicated to her! =D
I am going to take both this post and the current suggestions with me today as I head off to lunch with a friend. So many wonderful combinations, I think my head’s going to explode! Thank you!
You’re so welcome! Can’t wait to see what you discuss over lunch. ;-D Hope to pull that hubby of yours around too.
I love Elisabeth’s suggestions of Christabel, Lupe, and Calixta! All lovely. The one name that jumped to my mind is the Spanish “Celita” which means “little piece of heaven”–could be a way to honor your friend with the C and the heaven reference.
Best of luck!
I used to work with a Celita and always thought her name was beautiful.
vanessa
Love that! Celeste is also beautiful in both languages as well.
Lupe Christabel is so fabulous and incorporates two of your priorities, yours to honor your best friend and your husbands with the wolf reference. It also pairs beautifully with Dante’s name. Lupe Christabel definitely gets my vote. Good luck!
Christabel Guadalupe Baltier came to mind.
Frida is your hero? Okay, forgive me for taking another opportunity to pimp a name ending in -o for a little girl, but what about Kahlo Christabel? I know it’s technically a surname, but it doesn’t feel part of that trend–feels more like Willow, Marlo, Margot, Juno, etc.
Love Lupe Christabel! And Delphine is GORGEOUS, are you sure your husband can’t be convinced?!
I like the name Accalia (pronounced Ah-KAY-lee-uh). She was Romulus and Remus’s foster mother after the wolf, so the wolf thing is thrown in there.
Luz is very pretty, and I also like Seraphine/a…it has the firey thing going for it. Good luck, lots of beautiful choices here!
I agree with Elisabeth that you need to decide who is most important to honour, and from your post, it sounds like that’s most certainly your friend Christopher. It also sounds like it’s pretty important to both of you to honour your Mexican heritage in some way.
So how about Luna Christiane – Luna being Spanish for ‘moon’, and therefore having an association with wolves (I also just think it’s a beautiful name!). And Christiane in honour of your friend.
My name is Siobhán and see that another poster has suggested that as an alternative to Shaughn, which I must say I don’t like at all, and which doesn’t fit with your son’s name either. Siobhán is the Gaelic form of Joan, so there could be other derivatives there that you could consider, however I think Christopher has more potential to trigger a good name match for you than Sean does (I like all of the variations Elisabeth suggested – Christabel, Cristiana, Cristina and Christiane ), and I also think it’s more meaningful to use some variation of your friend’s first name rather than his middle name.
I must say I do love Delphine Lucia, and think that if your husband named your son, you really ought to have more of a say this time round! In fact, I would be insisting upon whichever name you love most!!
Ooh, good suggestion Siobhan! I love Luna.
Delphine Lucia is gorgeous. I’d fight to the death over it.
I think Delphine Lucia is a beautiful name, too. It’s obviously one you feel strongly connected to, like your husband did to Dante. I’m kind of surprised he’s telling you “no” to it, since he didn’t give any room for consideration with Dante.
If you really aren’t going to use Delphine Lucia, though, then I agree that Lupe, Araceli, Xochitl, and Cristobella are all beautiful names for your daughter. If you like Sean, then Shawna (or Seana or Shauna) might be an option. It’s decidedly more feminine, and still honours your friend directly. Celia is really pretty, too! And it’d be like you were resurrecting the name so it could be connected to your grandmother again, since she felt she had to lose it to preserve her maiden name.
Thanks, you guys! I think my brain is on overload from all the great suggestions! Hubby still has yet to weigh in (he was super exhausted after work last night) so we’ll toss these around this weekend!
I can’t thank you all enough for the input!

I love Calixta – C for Christopher, X for big brother, honors the heritage.
Calixta Luz
Calixta Lucia
Calixta Delphine
I love Lupe, too, or Lupita.
I have been going over this list, and I think I am going to take a few names with me to the hospital and wait til I meet her. I know I’m taking:
Calixta
Celia
Citlali
Accalia
Luz
Lucia
Delphine
Luna
Adela
I will probably mix her name from these…I’m very excited! My doc told me today that there is no way she’ll let me get to my due date thanks to Round 2 of Gestational Diabetes, so I am COUNTING DAYS! Thanks, you guys! <3
Well I took the list of names with me to the hospital and when Baby Girl was born with “angel kisses” on her eyelids and a stork bite on her neck, we decided to name her Scarlett Adele Baltier!
She was born Tuesday, July 26th at 744am and was 7lb 12.2 oz and is 20 1/2 inches long!
Thanks you guys!
