Stratton is the kind of name I want to hate, but love instead. It’s as preppy as Carter, but different, too.
Jane Ellen is perfect in her simplicity.
And Meridian – pure genius! I’m guessing that’s a boy? And Zoelle seems like the kind of name that could really catch on …
Meridian is a girl I believe– she made reference to her daughters’ unusual names.
I’m not sure I love Stratton, but I do find it intriguing. That could be a girl actually, but I don’t think so.
I agree, Jane Ellen, who goes by both names according to Mom, is perfect!
I also like Meridian and Stratton, but did you see Stratton’s siblings- Kadence and Kennedie? Not as unique:(
There was a book I read as a tween (before “tweens” existed, of course) called The Other Side of Time. The main character guy is a very romantic character and his last name is Stratton, but everyone calls him Stratton or Strat. I’m thinking that’s where the name came from, but I could be wrong, of course. I’ve long considered it for a boy, but think it sounds too preppy and made-up.
Leila Loren
Love Tillie, Dorothea, Myers and Peter.
Im so NOT into the last name as first name trend. I feel like I always know people who have the surnames that are often used as first names (including Stratton and Myers–really? Myers? It’s bad enough as a surname because it sounds plural.) Also using them for a daughter seems worse. Many girls who get married still do change their surname to their husbands, my friend would have been Myers Meyer, a friend’s wife, Stratton Stratton. Granted if this happened, they probably wouldn’t take their husbands name, but I think that in many cases the trend is a bit over the top. A side note, a friend recently named their new baby boy McKinley, I feel they didn’t think about the fact that he will spend his entire life saying “Capitol M, c, Capitol K, i, n,l,e,y”. That’s my rant. done.
Hear, hear, DJM. I totally agree. So many people nowadays are essentially picking names from the phone book.
Such practice has the opposite effect of what was intended — a “classy” name.
I would make exceptions for family names or names that have special meanings to the namers. In other words never say never, but please, people! At least look around at all the great names out there without saddling your child with one that could become an embarrassment should your child someday surpass you in education and culture.
Adele and Leo are two of my favorite names, so it’s fun to see them here as siblings!
Mina is sweet, Sitara is lovely and mysterious, and Arwen I just can’t help liking. (I actually considered giving my daughter the middle name Elbereth…so, yeah, I’m kind of a Tolkien nerd.)
I really thought I might use the name Celia for a while, but eventually I just thought “celiac” every time I looked at it. I’m glad to see someone else use it though; it really is pretty.
The names have been consistently good over there for the past 24 hours. I notice many of my readers posting their kids names! Hope one of ours is the winner. Good luck.
I love Adele, Mina and Gita as well. Something pretty tough and charming about Rhett. Love it. Just as a note from a Brazilian, the Portuguese spelling of Achilles would be Aquiles, since K and Y aren’t traditionally in the Portuguese alphabet. That makes Akylis pretty Kr8tyv in my book.
