Here’s a little something to chew on over the weekend.
I browsed the London Telegraph announcements again and am just fawning over these sibsets. Many could be born to no one but the British upper crust. How many Hamishes and Percys do you know? And Tabitha, Jemima, and Barnaby sound straight out of Beatrix Potter.
They’re creating a kind of a secret language, these Brits. Many of these, such as Flora, Calypso, and Monty, recur with startling frequency.
Is there anything you could see merging into your own fold? Any favorite combos?

Even though I went with my FAVORITE NAME EVER!, sometimes I wish I had a Florence May.
I like these sets:
Amelia Scarlett India, sister of Orlando, Felix & Willoughby
Atticus Oliver Ernest, brother of Lettice, Beatrice & Agatha (though Lettice is just not one I like at all; I just think of the vegetable)
Beatrice Rose & Rory Benedict, sister and brother of Theodore
Calypso Angelica, sister of India
Caspar David Akinwunni Akinyemi, brother of Cosmo & Freya
Douglas William Clementi & Genevieve Mabel brother and sister of Clementine & Matilda
Flora Lily, sister of Holly, Monty & Tilda
George John Vessey, brother of Wilfrid & Imogen
George Peter Creighton, brother of Albert & Bartholomew
Hamish Gerald St. George, brother of Gabriel & Percy
Hector Jack, brother of Saskia, Sophie & Algie
Hector Peter Charles & Dougal Henry George, brothers of Rupert & Flora
Henrietta Daphne Mabel, sister of Harry, Digby & Rowley
Imogen Katie, sister of Fergus Freddie
Jemima Emily Alexandra, sister of Tabitha & Barnaby
Johnny Nicholas, brother of Freya & Roscoe
I love pretty much every single one of these. Tabitha! Hector! Amelia! I wish they were more accepted in America. And by “in America” I mean “by my husband”…
Favorite combos:
Augustus and Hugo
Beatrix and Xanthe
Caspar, Cosmo, and Freya
George, Albert, and Bartholomew
Hamish, Hugh, and Xander
Johnny, Freya, and Roscoe
I really like a lot of these names individually but stacked all on top of each other for a single child and then compounded by the sibsets as a whole…it gets to be a bit much. Allegra Cosima Ortigia Saffron? Atticus Oliver Ernest? I do realize, though, that these folks are naming their kids in an entirely different class, culture, and tradition than my own. At any rate, here are some of the names I like from the list that I could actually imagine next to my own girls:
Allegra, Cosima, Calypso, Agatha, Xanthe, Ada, Freya, Iona, Hero (how sweet is Hero!? – and in her case, I actually like the long combination of Hero Genevieve Tallulah)
Felix, Hugo, Caspar, Arthur, Gabriel, Xander
Drool!
Mathilda Poppy just makes me giddy! Both on our list… thanks for posting! All totally swoon-worthy!
Oh I just adore the Telegraph and their endless list of scrumptious names! Haha!
Here are my favorites!
Allegra
Cosima
India
Atticus
Agatha
Augustus
Theodore
Beatrix
Ada
Angelica
Matilda
Poppy
Catriona
Imogen
I am drawn to these three brothers–Orlando, Felix, and Willoughby.
What a wonderful set; the names do not really suggest one another or anything so “vulgar” as a scheme, yet–wow–they complement each other so neatly.
Jemima, Tabitha & Barnaby all sound like Beatrix Potter characters. In a good way. I love them.
Hamish, Gabriel & Percy are awesome. So quintessentially English.
And I love Hero, Gus, Daisy, Archie & Conrad. Such cute, spunky, nicknamey names—Hero is a bit unexpected, but I like it.
Also Calypso and India.
I like:
Allegra
Atticus
Augustus
Beatrice
Beatrix
Caspar
Florence May
Iona
Hero Genevieve Tallulah
Imogen Daisy Lucia
Jemima
All these names in one heady list make me swoon, but individually, i’m not crazy about some of the name combos and sibsets, although there are a few gems in there (love Atticus, Lettice, Beatrice and Agatha – perhaps Lettice a bit less so; and Caspar, Cosmo and Freya is pretty cool too).
Actually, I know lots of Hamishs and a couple of Percys. But then I’m English and, although I didn’t announce in the Telegraph, I did announce both my daughters in The Times!
Really can’t stand english names. May be in the minority but they’re a bit too try-hard, and most of the boy names are terribly outdated.
This is the kind of list that keeps on giving…there’s so many delicious combinations that I can’t take them all in at one sitting! I’m particularly pleased to see Calypso on there, its so gorgeous. Can’t wait for Part 2!!
For a lover of names this list is fantastic! I love them all. As a list of potential monikers for my children, though… hmmm.
My given name is very Beatrix Potter-esque – in fact it appears on the above list. And while I love it, I’ve gone for something totally different for my own son and will do again if we have another child. Having said that, Barnaby has always been on my long-list!
I live in New Zealand, and it seems we follow the English more than the Americans, because most of the Telegraph names are normal here, whereas half of the names in the American top 100 I have never encountered on a child! Funny, huh!
Yep, it’s similar here in Australia.
I’m seeing some lovely names here: Augustus, Caspar, Cosima, Beatrix, Lettice…. India and Calypso are such sweet sibsets, as are Edmund Thomas and Henry Capability. Lovelovelove Hamish Gerald St. George and his brothers Gabriel and Percy, as well as Coco Isabella and Matilda Poppy. So many others, who will have to forego a mention by me for now –I’m bleary-eyed at this point.
Not really relevant, but I got a little jolt of excitement over the picture of the Mitford sisters. Letters Between Sisters is one of my favourite non-fiction books!
Oh, Emma, me too, me too! The Mitfords are an endless source. A family of such diverse personalities staked their claims in history while never ceasing to amuse and fascinate. And here’s a treat for name lovers: turn to page 294 (at least in the hardback edition — otherwise, just find “Nancy to Deborah, 25 March 1957″).
I may or may not have a bookmark permanantly in that page; one of the most interesting and unique baby name lists I have ever seen!
Heavenly list, thank you. Also very lovely for me to read (comments especially!) because I have a Matilda Poppy Ione. I love her names but not a day goes by when I don’t think about other names we could have chosen – Agnes, Beattie, Rose, Hebe, Hephzibah, Tirzah, Persephone, Sibylla… Minna Calypso was my long-time intended girl’s name but my husband was having none of it!
i LOVE Calypso…in the original greek, it’s pronounced with the accent on the o
poetic and tropical!
