Baby Peters

by You Can't Call It "It"! on February 22, 2011

Readers, Beverly needs your assistance please.  She writes:

My husband, David, and I are having a difficult time deciding on a name for our little girl.  Your help, and that of your readers would be appreciated!

Last time, I left name choices up to DH, while I retained veto power.  He chose Dawson Gregory for our son.  This time, he seems to be leaving naming up to me, other than vetoing most of my suggestions.

One thing we want to avoid is nickname hazards with our last name, Peters.  I suggested Beatrice, after my aunt who passed away early in my pregnancy, except that her nn was “Beats”.  DH nearly had a heart attack when he put the nn with our last name for our precious little girl!  I reminded him the last name was not MY fault.

Other names I’ve had on the list:

Adele

Adelaide–could have nn issues (addy laid). Not MY fault, remember!

Ainsley–he was ok with that too, until a couple we know just named their daughter that.

Amelia

Clara–he liked that one until I mentioned I occasionally used it as my “bar name” in my younger days.

Estelle

Gloria–DH’s mom is Glenda.  Too close?

Viola

Violet

He tends to suggest more popular names, and names that end in “son”.  I find the latter strange for a girl, especially considering our son’s name.

I can probably talk him into anything, but I would like to find something we both agree on.

Mae, Ann and Suzanne are family names that could be used as middle names, although it isn’t essential to use one of them.

I look forward to your insights!

Warmest Regards,
Beverly Peters

Hello Beverly!  I’m so glad you wrote us with your conundrum.  You’re too funny. His last name is not your fault.  I also laughed out loud at this:

I can probably talk him into anything, but I would like to find something we both agree on.

I thought the same thing!  Alas, even at the eleventh hour, it was not the case for us and we had to come to an agreement.  I’m hopeful that you and your husband, unlike us, can find one or two names you both love before the baby is born.  At least you know ahead of time that it’s a girl and can narrow down the field by 50%.

The names on your list are lovely.  Of course I love Beatrice and would never in a million years have a issue with Beatrice Peters, but if your aunt went by Beats?  Perhaps it’s best left alone.

I think Clara, Adelaide, and Ainsley should be off the list for reasons you mention above.  This leaves Adele, Amelia, Estelle, Gloria, Viola, and Violet.

Violet and Amelia are your most popular here, but they are absolutely ravishing and enduring classics, so they stay.  Adele, Estelle, Gloria, and Viola are more seldom heard.  Adele has been on and off my own list but ultimately I fear the Addie craze (Adalyn, Addison, etc.).  Does that scare you off?  If you love Addie, I say go for it.  Estelle has a lovely meaning and sound, and works well with Peters.  Viola has a kind of Southern charm, but there is the pronunciation issue there.  Long I or short?  Last my not least is Gloria.  I actually adore the connection with Glenda and think it could be such a nice tribute.

Middles of course depend on the firsts.  In addition to Mae, Ann, and Suzanne, you could expand to arrive at Mary, Anna, Susannah, Maryann, Zanna, Maisie… really any number of things to best suit the whole combo.  Do you all do this?  Change names to best suit the whole?  In our case Frenchified Alexandra to Alexandrine and Nancy to Anne.  I have no problem with this, but many people like to stick with the original.

You’ve done a great job finding names that work well with your surname and will wear well on a lady of any age.

Let’s put it to a vote.  I’m sure our readers can offer their experiences and opinions on these beauties, which I like so much I’m having a hard time choosing between!

I have to say Dawson & Adele and Dawson & Violet make lovely sibling sets.

LOVE Violet Mae and Amelia Mae. Adele is gorgeous also. Estelle and Gloria sound like Golden Girls to me, sorry. I do like Estelle somewhat better than Gloria. I find Viola darling also and it has a nice Shakespearean connection. My two cents, good luck and congratulations!

From the poll list, I voted for Gloria (love the nn Glory)… but really I think all of those work nicely.

I, too, would never see anything wrong with Beatrice Peters…but perhaps you could use it as a mn? Suzanne Beatrice Peters (nn Suzi, Sosie) is sweet. Or Maisie (maybe Maesie to honor the Mae?) Beatrice Peters? I also like Maesie Suzanne Peters. FWIW, if you use Suzanne as part of the name you also honor the Ann in the family.

A final suggestion – Maeve. I like Maeve Suzanne Peters and Maeve Beatrice Peters. Lovely, lovely.

Remind your husband that not only did he make the call on your son’s name but that both children will carry his family surname…so you should get top choice on this one (and your family names should absolutely get first dibs).

Ooh, I like the suggestion of Maeve and the nickname Sosie! Brilliant ideas.

I voted for Estelle. I love it; we have a daughter whose middle name is Estella. But, as far as siblings go, Adele sounds pretty great with Dawson too. Estelle or Adele?

Oh, also…maybe Lenore? Or Leonora?

I voted for Dawson and Amelia. Amelia *is* popular, but Elisabeth is exactly right – she’s an enduring choice you would not regret. Violet would be my #2 – I’m just not sure about violeT peTers – the repeating T sound isn’t my favorite.

Some of the names sound not-quite-right with Dawson. I love Estelle, but she sounds like Dawson’s granny, not his little sis.

I love the sound of Amelia Mary.

Best wishes!

I agree with you Abby but usually I’m of the general opinion that it’s best to choose the best name for the individual, and not worry too much about the matched set. That said, I have another consultation in which this is more of a consideration from my point of view. Stay tuned!

I voted for Viola! Dawson and Viola are really cute.

Also I LOVE Beatrice and Susannah. I like the idea of Susannah Mae Peters for you (n.n. Sookie, Sosie, Sunny, etc.) That way you honor several people at one time. I wouldn’t see any problem with Beatrice Peters either, but if the aunt’s nickname troubles you, you could use just Bea or Trixie as nicknames. I also like it in the middle!

Runners up for me were: Adele and Amelia

Good Luck!

I have an Amelia, so I may be biased. There are so many nicknames that we use for her – I’m sure it will be a great option for you :)

I would avoid Violet, though. To me, Violet Peters is like an extended case of Blue Balls…

Did anyone else read Violet and think Purple Peters? And I love Violet-in my single days I had it and Lucy on my future baby names list and my husband’s name, also not my fault, kept me from using them-Furr. All the ‘word’ names were unusable so I had to consider what part of the name I liked and find something similar-which brings you to Viola, which is wonderful. Vi, Vivi, Vee, all good nns. Love Viola, Amelia and Adele.

Oh no! Now I can’t get the slur “blue b___” out of my head. Oy. Not sure if that’s what you meant Heather, but I can see Violet being teasable.

Yes, that and the old Purple People Eater came to mind. Sorry-but better to think of it now than hear it later! Kids will come up with nasty nns no matter what the name is, but it’s smart not to give them the ammunition!

I am cracking up at the comments! I would have never made the Purple Peters connection-thank you. Violet is now officially OUT!

Keep them coming. The belly laughs may help start labor:)

Why not Beatrice nickname Bea? It’s a more natural nickname than Beats for me, and it’s so lovely. Even Betty or Betsy as nicknames, although they could be a stretch.

I voted for Viola, which I think is lovely, but what about Estella instead of Estelle? To me, it makes the name a bit more youthful sounding and I like it quite a bit.

I’ve always loved the name Gloria. My mom had a friend (who was actually a generation older than her) named Gloria Dawson, so for me, that pairing just sounds right for very personal reasons.

Oh, and I have an Addy, and despite all the Addisons (mine’s Adeline) there aren’t that many. Adele is lovely.

I’m with The Foodma on this one – Gloria. A combination of fun and authority with a hint of glamour. Retro but ripe for a splashy comeback. Dawson and Gloria? Adorable.

Also love Adele. And Estelle. But Gloria is simply glorious!

What about Margaret? I think Mae Margaret and call her Maisie or Daisy. Dawson and Daisy sounds adorable together – but their names are not matchy matchy in reality. I like the rhythm of Mae Margaret better than Margaret Mae. Daisy Peters – she has spunk!

I like this a lot too. Just wishy-washy I guess.

I think Amelia Peters has too much of an eeeeeee sound to it. Estelle is lovely and has a real gentle strength about it.

Also, while I looove Gloria, with Dawson there is to much of an “or” sound double-up, at least there is with the Australian accent.

I really like Beatrice (and my husband doesn’t, so I totally think you should use it instead of me – especially with the family connection.) Would be fine to use Bea as a nickname or whatever else you liked – rather than having to use the exact same nickname as your aunt.

Beatrice Peters….Beatrice Potter and Peter rabbit. This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s where my mind goes.

I like Estelle Susanna, nn Este, one if my favorites. Or Este Suzanne is even nice.

If using Mae, I’d use it up front, rather than in a middle slot. The suggestion Mae Margret is amazing! Also, Mae Mirium and Mae Muriel, nn Mim. I love Mim!

And if you’re big on nicknames, Suzzanna/Susanna has so many appealing
ones: Sosi, Zozi, Zizi, Zuvi.

I’m still a fan of Beatrice and agree Bea (Bay-aH) or just Be (Bee) might be another option for the nickname… you could also go with the French spelling, Beatrix, for some more distance from ‘Beats’?

Not to get you too muddled at this point, but I do second Maeve as another great choice with the surname and sibling as well as offer: Vera (you seem to like this letter?) Mae? Or, one of my all-time favorite names (and on our list for #2 due in a few weeks), Mathilde Mae…

Congrats and good luck!

As much as I love Beatrice, I also made the immediate association of Beatrix Potter and Peter Rabbit, and likewise with Violet – I immediately thought of the UK show ‘Blue Peter’. Of the names in the poll, I like Estelle (or Estella, as a PP suggested), and think it flows nicely with Peters. I do like Clara with your surname too, despite your husband’s misgivings!

Amelia is my first choice for you (I _like_ the repeating “e” sounds!), but I love Margaret/Daisy as well. And Adele, without the nickname Addie.

Estelle Peters sounds so elegant and classic to me. I think Esty is a cute nickname too.
