Calling Class Rosters!

by You Can't Call It "It"! on September 9, 2010

It’s the Jewish new year and the new year in school.  Time for a whole NEW SLEW of name influx at You Can’t Call It “It”!

Weren’t you just SO excited to get your class list– just for the names?

Post them here if you like.  You may disguise them (or yourself) from Google easily enough by changing an I to a 1, an a to the @ symbol, a T to a + sign, etc. if you like.  If it’s not too much voyeurism, tell us what state you’re in too.  We’ll make a study of it.

The school my twin 7-year-old grandsons James and Andrew attend doesn’t give out class lists in the fall, so I’ll share the lists for last spring’s first grade classes from the school year book. Most of these children are back this fall in the 2nd grade classes. (The class lists were posted at the school right before school started.)

Xyola sounds like zigh 0 lah

Pretty ordinary names at our school, not very many duplicates, and quite a few ‘creative” spellings for girls. Definitely many of the names discussed in this blog would not “fit in”. This is not the land of Sebastians and Imogens!

Reply

3 Sebastiane September 14, 2010 at 10:16 am

Wow, Xyola is cool! Do you know why her parents chose it?

Reply

4 Beth September 16, 2010 at 1:40 pm

It’s from a Jane’s Addiction song. I don’t know for sure that this is where the parents got it but that’s the only place I’ve ever heard that name.

This won’t be an exhaustive list, but these are the ones I can recall off the top of my head from daughter Norah’s pre-K class (we’re in the Kansas City, MO metro area):

Girls:
Norah (mine)
Annabelle
Reese
Katelyn
Lilli
Ava

Boys:
Mike
Nathan
Wyatt
Noah
Colson
Alejandro

My son’s kindergarten class:

Girls:
Hailee
Sydney
Summer
Gennovah
Raquel
Sarah (2)
Emily
Caitlyn
Gracie
Sophie
Cristiannie

Boys:
Sebastian (mine)
Justin
Theron
JJ
Gaven
Kaleb
Maxwell
Levi
Isaac
Ethan
Nathanael
Judd

We’re in Utah. I don’t notice anything too significant–all the names sound very normal to me, and I’ve probably met multiples of all of them–except Gennovah and Christiannie and Judd. I know Sebastian is pretty popular in the U.S. too, but maybe not so much here—anyway, I haven’t met any others yet.

Also, here are the 2nd graders.

Girls:
Shantell
Summer
Kimber
Chloe
Paige
Talia
Mya
Hannah
Savannah
Alexandra
MiKenna
Brighton
Avery
Leia
Clara
Trista
Gelsey

Boys:
Isaac
Caden
Chase
Brock
Alexander
Abraham (mine)
Gage
Wyatt
Parker
Jasper
Skyler
Geffrey
Quincy
Staley

I think it’s interesting to see the “G” spelling of Geoffery, without the “o”!

Staley? Wonder if that is a Heavy Metal inspired name. Gelsey! So unusual and cute. Reminds me of ballerinas.

I really like Gelsey. Makes me think of ballerinas too.

my children don’t get class lists, but it’s a very typical english mix in all their classes and rather different to most of the names already posted. i have to say i love the picture today! the tiger who came to tea was my sisters favourite book as a little girl and now is my younger daughter’s favourite! i’ve been present at many tiger related tea parties over the years :)

I go to a catholic sixth form in England (16-18yrs):

Elsa, Marie (pronounced by her as MAR-ee), Ana-Sofia, Sasha, Rhian, Niamh, Clare, Beatrix (x2), Eilish, Amira, Ciara, Eliza, Martha, Poppy, Demi (not short for anything), Caprice, Ruth, Magda.

George (x2), Ayrton, Jack (x3), Timothy ‘Tim’, Joseph (x2), Bryn, Dieudonne, Fionn, Barrie, Séan, Aidan, Alasdair, Luke, Lewis.

The irish names are the norm at the school, since it’s catholic.

Our school doesn’t hand out rosters, but some of the names in her class are:

Alex (Alexandra)
Emily
McKenna
Olivia
Mariyah

Hudson
Dylan
Davin

The usual slew of names for our area.

We didn’t get handed a list, but there was one posted and being name-obsessed I wrote them all down. :)

These are 5-6 year olds in the midwest USA.

Diana
Eleanor
J@i@
Jasmine
Madison
McKenna
Rose
Sophie

Boys:

I have trouble pronouncing A!yanna. I was saying AY-are-nah, but my daughter said it’s I-are-nah.

Not so sure on the pronunciation of Ja!a either. My daughter said it’s “gy-ee-ah”. I wondered if it was “Jay-ah”.

There’s an Oscar in the other Kindergarten class. My daughter was going to be an Oscar, if she’d been a boy. There’s also a Bless!ng in the other class.

Our school doesn’t give class lists (well, not to students anyway), but names of new kids and their classes were up in the hall before summer. Sorry I only remembered the interesting ones:
2x G3orgina
Georgia (same class, so that will be fun for their teacher)
Zsuzs@nn@ (I LOVE this. Her surname was Eastern European and that’s the Polish spelling)
Ruby
Elena

In our year there is also a Z3n0b!a-J@y (sister Andr33na-J@y, brother J@yden) and Sh@quilla (sha-keel-a, her family are middle-eastern).

My 2 year old son had a class today and all the names of the preschoolers were on the wall. I wrote down the most interesting ones:

Daeth0n – I thought it might be a spin on Jason or Nathan, but putting it into a search engine pops up Welsh grammar results. I think “Daeth0n ni” means ‘we came’? So perhaps they were looking for a Welsh inspired name.

0rryn – looked this one up and found it listed as a derivation of Oran, meaning ‘green’ in Irish. It makes me think of Owen.

There was also a 2 year old girl named ‘Kenzie’, which I presumed was a spin on MacKenzie / McKenzie. Turned out to be short for Kens!ngt0n instead.

There’s a Nevaeh in Bonnie’s preschool. My first real life one here in NZ. Also a Lottie who is apparently Bonnie’s bestie.

OT but The Tiger Who Came To Tea was one of my favourite childhood books. The tiger was a complete arse and extremely creepy. Nevertheless, I loved the illustrations.

LOVE class list time! We’ve switched from a small private to a large public school this year and I was waiting for the lists and they don’t hand them out. But when I was there the first week for a newcomer’s coffee, I saw the lists and took pictures-they must think I am crazy, but I really wanted to see the names! And I wasn’t disappointed, either. Have to add to the comment about Summers: a few years back my daughter had a Summerlin in her class. She has since moved to Florida. Always liked her name.
