Princess Leia

by You Can't Call It "It"! on July 6, 2010

Sarah’s due in 12 days and she needs our assistance quick.

I’m expecting my first, a little girl, July 18th. Naming her is proving to be the most difficult part of this pregnancy. I keep waiting to hear “the one”, to fall in love, but so far no luck.

He’s a Star Wars fan, and adores the name Leia. My first reaction was “absolutely not, she’ll get teased forever.” But over time the name really grew on me. I also want him to feel involved in choosing a name for his daughter. So now my biggest concern is that people will always mispronounce it as Leah (lee-a vs. lay-a). He also likes the names Jade and Ivy. I much prefer Ivy to Jade.

No relatives I would like to use as a namesake. Name meaning isn’t essential. Popularity isn’t a deal breaker, but we both prefer a more unique name (our names were top 5 in 80-81, we’re hoping she’ll avoid being one of many in her classes). However, I don’t want a creeatyve name either. I’d love to find something that can be shortened into a nickname, but that’s not essential.

I was wondering if I gave you a list of names I’m currently considering if you could give me some guidance, or a kick in the butt?

Alice (still in the running, I like the nickname Allie, but he says no to Allison)

Avery (I still love  despite the rise in popularity and unisex-ness… is that a word??)

Claire (seems too simple as a first name)

Cassidy (vetoed off list)

Colette

Elise (prefer as a middle name)

Indigo

Jacinda

Juliet (only like it as a middle name, seems plain as a first name)

Maya (still fantasizing about using this name, even if it sounds silly with my last name)

Naomi (vetoed, he said it spells “I Moan” backwards)

Natalie (vetoed off list)

Olivia (I still like this name, I told him he can use Ivy as a nick name…it’s a stretch)

Scarlett

Sienna

Stella (prefer to Sienna)

Sydney

Teagan (concerned about being teased)

Vera

Zoe (I love that it means “life” but I’m still concerned that it won’t age well. I go back and forth a lot but as of today I prefer Zoe to Chloe)

Congratulations Sarah!  We’re so excited for you.

I admire your quest to come to a consensus and sympathize with how hard that is.

Any names that Dad has “vetoed” should be out.  There’s little point in twisting his arm since you are not in love with any one name.

Conversely, has he sat down with your list and tried to embrace any of the ones you love?  He may have some more preferences there.

Even if he isn’t giving you many options, Dad has some great names on his list.  Ivy in particular would suit anybody well.  It has a sassy quality of some of the names on your list like Colette, Indigo, Stella and Zoe, but it’s a name you both like and you might have a winner there.  Maya seems much too close to Myers.  Leia is really beautiful, BUT– and this is a big but– she will never be able to get away from the Star Wars connection.  I know.  I was hearing “Luc, I am your father” through both of my pregnancies.  We have two girls, so it did not become an issue.  :-)

The reason he likes Leia is probably only due to Star Wars, but perhaps he could be persuaded by a similar name whose connotations don’t loom so large?  Have you tried Leila, Lila, or Lilia?

It does seem “fair” that you would choose one name from his list and one from yours for this baby’s name.  Here is a list of combinations that really work.  Stella is a great name but it’s not on here because paired with Jade or Ivy it becomes too “nouny”, and with Leia it’s much too star filled and isn’t the best flow. Rhythm, style, and popularity were reasons for ousting the others.  Jade is particularly difficult to pair.  I love it with Vera and possibly Alice because their images balance one another. Favorites are starred.

1.) Ivy Claire*

2.) Ivy Elise*

3.) Ivy Juliet*

4.) Colette Leia*

5.) Colette Ivy*

6.) Scarlett Leia

7.) Indigo Leia

8.) Vera Jade*

9.) Alice Leia*

10.) Indigo Ivy*

11.) Alice Ivy*

12.) Jacinda Ivy*

13.) Ivy Leia

14.) Alice Jade

15.) Avery Leia

16.) Teagan Leia (Does anyone think this will get teased?  I don’t, but maybe I’m naive.)

Of course I would love to see you find a name that you both fall in love with.  Anything here?  I’m sure our readers have other ideas too!

Ada, Anya, Delia, Elodie, Esme, Eve, Fiona, Genevieve, Isla, Jane, Leila, Lila, Lilia, Maeve, Phoebe Sasha, Talia, Thora, Willa, Willow

I hope this has been helpful Sarah and we look forward to hearing both your thoughts.

If you’re not that into unisex names, I’d stay away from Avery, Cassidy, Indigo, Jade, Sasha and Sydney.

I think Leia is pretty, go for it! I don’t think the Star Wars-connection is that bad, she is a good character after all :) In Sweden, Leia ranked #65 among girl’s names last year.

Names with a similar sound that I like are:
Ania/Anya, Ayla, Kaia, Layla, Lila, Leila, Nadia.

Good luck with the naming!

I actually like Leia too! And being the only one in the class is a big plus imo. Of the names suggested, the combinations I like best are:

Leia Olivia
Leia Scarlett
Leia Indigo
Leia Colette

Leila is a pretty alternative. Good luck, Sarah!

I inadvertantly omitted these:

Leia Juliet
Leia Jacinda
Leia Vera
Leia Alice
Leia Ivy

Also like Lilia or Lilias. Ivy is cute but I prefer the near-uniqueness of Leia.

Call me crazy, but I’d use Leia.

Yes, it’s a wacky sci fi Star Wars name. Friends of ours – who actually got engaged at the San Francisco premiere of the first of the more recent trilogy – used Leia for their daughter’s middle name.

With all the girls called Lila, Leah, Lily and such, I think Leia seems perfectly reasonable.

From your list, I’d pick Leia Juliet or Leia Jacinda.

And hey, either she’ll LOVE her name or she’ll give the big eyeroll to Dad in about thirteen years. :)

Best wishes!

My name has been mispronounced (people always feel the need to end it with an “l” and call me Krystal) & misspelled my whole life…it wasn’t that big of a deal. Just a little annoying when it was spelled wrong on all the closing documents for our home.

That said, I think Leia Elise is really pretty. Very feminine and unique but not weird. Congrats on your little girl!

I don’t think the Star Wars connection is a good reason not to use Leia if you both love it. People use names from fiction all the time. Even Juliet, for instance, which you have on your list. Sure, George Lucas is no Shakespeare, but – in my humble opinion – Leia’s the stronger woman.

I also like Ivy, Stella, Alice, and Zoe.

My vote is for Leia Colette!

Elisabeth thank you so much (now tell me where to send you cookies)! A big hug of appreciation to everyone for their feedback as well.

Mike won’t jump on board for a Leia alternative, I tried Leila in the beginning, and he just shook his head singing the Eric Clapton song. I also tried Leilani (nn Leia), and he wasn’t having that either. After a week I realized Leilani wasn’t my style either. He didn’t dislike “Lila” but he says lee-la like the cartoon in Futurama, and I say lie-la.

Anya and Fiona were both on my longer list that has been difficult to cut! But Anya is difficult for him to pronounce (he has mild aphasia), and Fiona doesn’t pull my heart strings as much as the other names now. Isla is a recent crush name of mine, good thinking. I’ll have to run that one by him.

Seeing them written out by someone else and saying them outloud so far my favorite combos are Alice Leia, Leia Colette, and Ivy Elise.

Yay for wifi at the hospital so I can pull up this page after she’s born and help us decide! I will definitely keep you posted. Again, I am so so grateful for the help!

So, I love the names, but there are potential teasing issues. I have no idea how your daughter would be teased about the name Teagan. I’ve never heard any teasing with the Teagans I know.

Leia and Ivy, however… I’ve known 2 Ivys and both were picked on and called “Poison Ivy” – and it wasn’t in the sexy-Uma-Thurman-in-Batman kind of way. It was mean. One was overweight, but the other was a perfectly likeable girl, popular even, but still would cry over being called Poison Ivy.

Leia is made dirty by turning it into a contraction of “lay ya”…as in have sex with you. It’s a beautiful name, but if he vetoed Naomi for being “I moan” spelled backward, how did he miss this obvious problem?

I know when my husband and I were negotiating names for our daughter, he would come up with dumb reasons to veto names when really he should have said “I just don’t like it” and would try to justify the names he did like when I’d veto them.

I think the strongest names on your list are Elise and Claire. Elise would be a great first name – unique, but not weird. Or try Annaliese/Annalisa. And you could do the same with Claire to make it less “simple” – make it Clara.

Also, I don’t think Ivy as a nickname is too much of a stretch from Olivia, but Olivia is getting VERY popular – maybe try Olive, or the version I invented for my friend’s baby: Olivianna.

“Come on I wanna lay ya” – Yep I thought about that for Leia, but Mike being such a huge SW fan he doesn’t see how some people could twist it or mispronounce it. He thinks Annaliese sounds like “anal ease” so I know he’s just skewed in his love for the name Leia ;)

With Teagan, the feedback I’ve had from a few people is people associating it with “tea bagging.” I’m glad to hear most people don’t make that immediate association.

With a name like Michael Myers, I have to say I’m surprised he’s so keen on naming his kid after a movie character. Didn’t he get picked on, asked if he ever visited Camp Crystal Lake?

I do love the name Leia. I just think it’s more ripe for teasing than Annaliese or Naomi.

We’re not married, the baby is taking my last name, but I do have a relative named Michael Myers. He hates his name because of the movie character, so I definitely get where you’re coming from.

Hi Sarah,

You’re queeste for a name sounds familiair, as my father loved the King Arthur stories and therefor convinced my mother to call me “Olwen”. A character from those stories, aka “the princess with the white footsteps” (as littlewhite flowers grew everywhere she walked). It’s a very uncommon name where I live, and it is often misspelled or interpreted as a boys name, but still I’ve always loved my name!

Good luck with finding the right name,

Olwen

I like Leia, it has a pretty sound and is not too hard to spell/pronounce. Of those names you’ve suggested I like: Leia Colette, Leia Claire, Leia Sydney and Leia Vera. I especially love Leia Collete, I’m not even a huge fan of the name Colette but something about the combination exudes sweetness.
I wish you all the best with the baby, I’m sure you will find the perfect name for your little one.

If you both love Leia, I don’t think the Star Wars connection is reason enough not to use. Just don’t name the next one Luke. ;)

I also didn’t understand how Teagan could lead to teasing until the tea-bagging thing was pointed out and even then, I think it’s a stretch.

I like:
Leia Claire
Leia Collette
Leia Juliet

Good luck and congratulations on your little girl!

I think that Leia is really nice. Having an Uncommon name is awesome at times she won’t like it, but I have come to love it. I could just put my name on something it didn’t have to be Jessica S. I could just be Tatum. As far as the middle name I am in love with the name Collette its a name I have dreams about. :)

I have a friend whose daughter is called Leia, and it is only now that I have made the connection to Star Wars. My friend and her husband are French, I just assumed it was a common French name, and it is beautiful!

Don’t worry about the nerd connection, she will be her own person :)

I feel your pain Sarah – we are having this same struggle with boy names! I was lucky enough to ‘fall in love’ with a girl name early. (We’ll be surprised at the hospital)

Two names that were on my girl list that are ‘similar’ to your names are:

Clara (I just love the way this one rolls)
Livia (I love the L names :) , Lila, Lola, Lily etc)

Best of luck!

If you start to lean towards Colette maybe consider Nicolette. My name is Nicolette and it has never disappointed.

As a baby I was Nicolette or Nicole. As a teen I switched to Nikki and during my “too cool for two syllables” phase I switched to Nic, ultimately coming back around to Nicolette.

Bonus: If my memory serves me right, no one was ever able to use my name against me (and little kids and geniuses at mean talk).

The traditional prn of the name “Leah” is the same as Leia, in case you want to use the more well-known spelling. If you are in a city like New York with a lot of observant Jews, you will have no problem getting people to use this prn.

Hi!
I just wanted to chime in because I did indeed name my daughter Leia after her father’s original crush- the princess from Star Wars. Leia is turning 13 this summer and has never been teased for her name. I think it is a perfect balance between modern and traditional and there is yet to be another Leia among her peers. It IS almost always pronounced Lee-ah by strangers, teachers, etc. but she doesn’t seem to mind. (No one pronounces our surname correctly, either!) She is a really good speller, which may have something to do with her constantly having to spell out her name correctly. Ha ha.

Our heritage is french, as is our surname, so when combined with her middle name of Marie people just assume Leia is a french name. Also, people who are familiar with the jewish traditional name Leah (pronounced Lay-ah) seem to feel an affinity for her. :) Only the occasional peer of her father and I mention the Star Wars connection.

We have been very pleased with the name choice and encourage you to go with your heart when naming your daughter.

Well, I know I’m late, but have you considered using Leia as a nickname? If you pronounce the first syllable of Leora as lay (which The Baby Name Wizard says you can), Leora could work as a full name. Leonore/Leonora could work as well (lay-o-NOR is the French pronunciation, right?). So, my suggestions:

Leora
Leonora
Leonore
Linnea
Galilea (probably too sudsy, but just in case)
Leilani

I don’t know if any of these work for you, but good luck!

I love the name Leia. Adorable. I’m currently trying to find a baby name for my little-one-to-be and one thing I’m trying to avoid is middle name that starts with the same sound as the first name. It doesn’t roll off of the tongue as well. i.e. Liea Aleesha. How about Leia Jane?
