Metropolitan Monikers

by You Can't Call It "It"! on June 3, 2010

Living in a cosmopolitan hotbed, I can’t help but “collect” the names of the children I meet on a daily basis.  What surprised me most was meeting two Elodies within days of one another.

Here’s the most recent crop.

If you had to choose a boy and a girl’s name off this list, what would it be?  I’ll take Imogene and Raphael today, thank you.

Out of those Octavia and Raphael are my favourites. Although Fabiana sounds very nice.

My daughter and my son are both on these lists. :)

On the girls list I’d take Dorothy (nickname Dot) – though my husband isn’t really into that one. Willa is very nice too.

On the boy’s list, Clive stands out to me as a very English / British pick. Though I probably wouldn’t actually use it, because it doesn’t fit the “old people” theme of my other names. :P

For a girl, Elodie, Alice, or Beatrice and for a boy, Raphael.

But… I most of the names. :-)

*I mean, “I love most of the names”, not “I most of the names”.

I should really learn to edit. :-)

Carys and Lena are both on my list. I don’t love any of the boys names, but if I HAD to pick one… Maybe Grady?

Lots of these names have been on my list for a while, especially the girls’ ones. But today I fancy something different. I’ll take Octavia, thanks!
I’ve already used one of those names for a son, so maybe if I had to choose another, it would be Casimir. Although hubby would never agree to it ;)

I’d use Casimir in a heartbeat too Jane. Maybe Octavia– I was quite taken with it when I heard it in real life.

Today, Bryce and Willa would be my choice.

Jules for a boy, without a doubt (Jules et Jim – perfection)! He would be Jules Benjamin.

As for girls, I’d want Elodie or Edie in first place, and Dorothy in second, but the flow is off … oh, never mind – I’ll take Elodie Dorothy nn Edie please! (Initials ED.)

The boys list is really delicious! Since I already have a Rafael, I would choose Casimir, and for a girl Beatrice.

Runner ups would be Elodie, Octavia, Vivian, Claude, Clive, and Gus.

I could see you with a Beatriz. :-)

Actually, Beatrix has moved back to my short list. If we have more kids, we will only have 1 more….since we didn’t use Felix last time around, if we had a girl Beatrix is in the running. I just would never have had a Felix and a Beatrix!!

Oh that’s wonderful! We do have similar tastes. I have Raphael on the list, and adore Felix. It was my great-grandfather’s name actually, but alas, that’s not in the cards.

tough call. I’d say either Alma or Nola, and probably Rhys from the boys. Had a tougher time finding one that really grabbed me from the gents

Alice
Annick
Astrid
Beatrice
Edie
Francesca
Iris
Lena
Octavia
Olive
Wila

Casimir

Dov
Gus
Irving
Jude
Leon
Raphael

And if I absolutely had to choose only one of each, I’d go with Octavia and Raphael.

Beatrice and Irving (although Louis is making the boy name choice tough for me today! And I’d actually go Beatrix, but Beatrice is lovely and is easily my #1 girl name pick from the list, since I’ve already got an Imogen.)

I’d go for Lucas & Tatum
Tatum I’ve lived since I was really young . It’s just so spunky to me. I also have Carys on my list. Nola is (in spirit ) on the list

A lot of the other names on that list i.e. Louise I do come across a lot. Some of them are of people around my age give or take a decade.

Astrid
Carys
Cora
Edie
Elodie x2
Imogene
Indigo
Kika
Lena
Lila
Nola — damn you mayonnaise brand for taking it away from me
Olive
Teagan — has an interesting Celtic history
Tatum
Vivian -ONLY spelled as Vivienne

BOYS that I like

Elias when said the Greek/German way
Casimir
Grady
Lucas
Raphael
Rhys (though the spelling always makes me think of ‘rice’)

Beatrice and Claude!

Elisabeth, how old was the Louise you met? It was my late Mother’s name and I like it a lot. I’m not American, so don’t hear the ‘wheeze’ that some people complain of. It’s European and travels well.
I looked up the statistics and there were just 100 babies by this name born in 2009 in the U.S.

Iris and Claude.

Sophia and Max are both on my list :) Winners!

For girls, I also like:
Imogene (pron. Imo-JEAN, not Imo-JEN… I thought Gigi or Genie could be a cute nn!)
Lena
Lila
Astrid.

For boys nothing really stood out, except for Vaughn – but that’s only because I’ve been watching my Alias boxset all week :D Michael Vaughn = <3… haha

Some great choices. Two top contenders for our next baby are on this list, so I’ll go with them (they’re both family names):

Rosemary (nn Romy)
Grady

I have an Elodie and am quickly realizing I’m going to become one of those parents that pleads “but I chose it first”! I had never, ever heard it in the US until about 6 months ago. My daughter is almost two and I’m now struggling with her brother’s name… from this list I’ll take Elias.
