2009 brought it’s fair share of widespread offenses. Say them with me people, this year’s baby name resolutions for America:
10) There shall be no “Leigh” except Leigh itself: no Haileigh, no Baileigh, no Marleigh, no Ryleigh. Out too are all G-H configurations as vowel substitutes– the prettiness of Hailough notwithstanding.
9) Just because I name a baby Angelina Jolie doesn’t make it so.
8 ) Likewise with Aniston, Annyston, or Annistynne.
7) I will only put Renesmee on the birth certificate if it is indeed a family name.
6) Chic as they are, I promise not to ostracize my daughter by giving her an old lady name with an actual sound I personally do not like. There is a limit, and the reemergence of Wilma and Gertrude may have to wait.
5) No matter what I think of a child’s name, be it a violator off this list or the previous one, I will still let my child play with them and won’t be prejudiced. :-)
4) Naming a daughter “Sam” alone may not speak very well of her father’s character; Samantha, Samira, or Jessamine are far superior. Take note if Sam is your fiancé’s favorite name for a girl.
3) I resolve that KH does not the “ch” sound make.
2) While we’re on the subject of original spellings, consider yourself warned: a little “Unique” may just wind up a Eunuch.
1) Because some people didn’t get the memo from last year– negative and or aggressive does not equal cool. This includes Talon, Mars, and yes– Bandit.

Happy New Year! Love these
I love #5.
Great resolutions.
Alas! I’m absolutely infatuated with Gertrude at that moment! Does Cecily lessen the blow, so to speak? Gertrude Cecily? What about Gertrude Alice? Gertrude Lillian?
at the moment *
Wordsmith, is that you?!
I recognise your combo from several other places you’ve posted it. I love Gertrude too!
[vomiting from BtN and BNaBBT]
I actually do kind of like Gertrude. Mostly because I find all the potential nick names adorable. Gertie, Trudy, Tru(e), what’s not to love?
I LOVE Trudy too! Gertrude Cecily does kind of lighten the blow.
But do you name lovers see my point? Is there a point of ridiculousness with the old lady chic love? If it’s not Wilma for you, what about Lurleen? Hedwig (I love)? This may have to be a separate post.
Yes, Nancy– #5 is the most important!
I’d LOVE to see a post on (m)old(y) lady chic!
Great post!
Hahahaha. This totally made my day.
Happy New Year!!!! Cheers to a year of good names!
Another lovely name, if you’re after a daughter called Sam, is Samara. I know 2, and they are both beautiful little girls who get lots of compliments on their name.
I agree re the old lady names – some sound fresh and lovely again, but others sound awful! Gertrude, Agnes, Doris, Eunice, Muriel, Joyce, Marjorie, Flora, Daphne, Una, Vera, Mavis, Martha, Bertha and Maude are on that list for me personally. All could be made more appealing with a cute nickname or a pretty middle name, though.
Agnes is trendy as anything in Sweden. It’s like Emily.
I had heard that!! Funny how these things work. A year ago I visited relatives in Denmark and was told that Derek is a trendy cool name there. The total opposite in my neck of the woods!!
Elisabeth, here are some other old lady names to add to your “granny chic” post if you do one! Norma, Phyllis, Myrtle, Edna, Barbara, Ethel, Maureen, Dulcie, Doreen and Mildred. I personally dislike them all, but a close friend is seriously considering Muriel, Martha and Dulcie!
I’m late, but Happy New Year! Love the list and sadly I just found my first Renesmee. May she be the only one I find this year.

Brilliant! However, I too must confess to love Gertrude, the only thing that really throws me off are the possible nicknames (Gertie and Trudie). I’d want it all in one piece or not at all.
