It’s back to school time and the mad rush is on for shiny new backpacks and shoes that can take a beating. Does anyone look forward to hearing the names of your childrens’ classmates as much as any other part of the process?
Guilty.
While we are just beginning to think about preschool applications here, I do have a short list of children we’ve met in recent days. Come one come all– ballet class, soccer practice, home room and tai kwon do. Post ‘em! And if you really want to make this fun, don’t be afraid to tell us (roughly) where you’re from.
Here’s mine so far:
Abigail (& Keagan)
Bella
Eva
Michelle
Sadie (& Declan)
Arthur
Declan (& Sadie)
Eliseo (& Itzal)
Felix
Griffin
Itzal (& Eliseo)
Judah
Keagan (& Abigail)

Yes! I was so excited to read the names of my daughter’s preschool class. These are 4 year olds in the midwest USA:
Rose (& Henry)
Cora
Sophia
Joslyn
Kiley
Hailey (& Carissa)
Owen (& Carson & Grant (twins))
Michael
Logan
Devin
Garrett
Evan
Tyler
The most interesting name on the list was Mimosa, but it turns out that she’s not in the class anymore.
We visited yesterday and all the children had to say their name. My daughter is Rose and when she said her name, the little girl next to her asked her Mom: “Is that her real name?!?”
Felix & Griffin are pretty cool on your list. Sadie & Declan make a cute sounding pair too.
These are the two nursery classes of a private school (pre-prep) in Surrey, England…

The only one that really stands out to me, is Blair, as I see it as being a very American name. That’s not said in an offensive way, it’s just how I view the name, and part of me wonders if he has an American parent. However, then it is a boy, and correct me if I’m wrong but I though it was more a girl’s name in the US. So perhaps he is named after our former Prime Minister instead!
That’s interesting about Blair… it stood out to me too. I (American) know only one Blair personally, a man in his mid-twenties. It seems like an odd choice for a boy, American or English, and not really common for a girl either.
My best bet is he’s named for the Prime Minister.
It’s always a treat to see the names of your child’s classmates!

Camille and Estelle, however…
I’ve also heard of twins Camille and Marina. Love that name!
I’ve only noticed a few interesting names in my daughter’s Kindergarten class: Iexa, Zeke, and Camilla. Those are wild for where we live (central CA). The rest of the class is made up of Alex’s (girl), Paytons, Madelines, Lukes and the like.
Loving twins Lillian and Vivian from the comment above.
Forgot two surprisingly good boys names: Harrison and Hudson. There was also an Elijah but he has been sent back down to preschool, poor kid.
My mom’s a teacher and she got her classlist. Her students are: (These are the ones I remember.)

I swear that on one of the other classroom bulletin boards, I saw the name Milkey. Yikes!
Oh, and my youngest daughter (17 months) is in daycare. The kids in her class are:
Lucy (my daughter)
Stella
Dylan
Ty
Brandon
Martha Stewart? Why, why, why would someone do that? I try really hard to be open minded when I read these lists, but come on. If your last name is Stewart find any other name beside Martha. Or Rod.
Love your girls names, also. Norah and Lucy are adorable!
My thoughts exactly on the Martha Stewart name. I mean, if Martha is a family name and you MUST use it, for heaven’s sake use it in the mn spot if you have the last name Stewart!!!
Glad you like Norah and Lucy as a sibset…I think it suits them both perfectly. I only wish I’d realized how popular Lucy was!
some of my DD’s preschool (We’re in Hollywood, CA)

Fenix? Of all the ugh-inducing, fonetik spelling awefulness. . . .
The rest are not too bad — I like Twyla.

We live in New York (not the city) and my sister just recently got a job as an art teacher, so of course, I had a peek at her class lists. There were the predictable: 7 Jacobs (two of them were Jakob), 7 Emilys (1 was an Emilee), 4 Ethans, a coupe Ryans, a couple Zacharys. What was surprising was that there were as many Karlies as there were Ethans — All with that spelling. I took notes of the more interesting ones, so I’ll be back with those later. (One memorable one was a little Esperanza! Score one for the home team!)
I adore Felix. The rest are ok. They just don’t jump out at me.
Names from the bohemian artist parent set in downtown NYC:

Last year my son started PreK 3. At the open house, I looked aorund for any listing of all the children’s names. I found a big bulletin board with construction paper fish with names. I looked them over-Christian, Austin, Morgan, Jayden and there in the middle was “Chocolate”! I was surprised, I’d never heard that one! I asked the teacher which child was named Chocolate, and she laughed-it’s the name of the teddy bear mascot for the class!
Nice one! That made me laugh out loud for real.
My daughter age 2 is in a music class in venice beach CA. Some of the more unusaul names are:

Uh, that isn’t Persephone hidden under that cloak of horrible, is it? And Daylee? That really just proves that for girl names these days, all you have to do is add a letter to -aylee and it’s “OMG thats soooo kyoot and speshul lik da sunshine!!!1!!”
I’m afraid that my daughter’s preschool class has a case of the “-ens/-ons.”

Hello! I really love your website, and names. I’m still just a teenager myself, but these are the names in my homeroom. (I live in western PA):
Girls:
Alexis

Lexi
Samantha (me)
Merritt
Nicole
Kaitlyn
Briana
Boys:
Stefan
Preston
Isaiah
Chris (probably Christopher)
Gregory
Shaun
Matt
–There are more, but my brain really isn’t working right now.
It’s been awhile since I’ve checked my favorite blog here, but I had to add…
I teach 4th grade in CO. This year I have many of the same names, but one different one is Burgundy. I wasn’t sure how I liked it at first, but I became more defensive of little Burgundy’s name when another parent was making fun of it. It feels like a very strong, rich name. Definitely NOT Madison or Katelyn!
I don’t have a class list but do know someone who works at the maternity ward in a hospital. A recent patient named her daughter “Abcde” prounched ab-sah-day….unbelievable. I thought this was one for the books.
I’ve met an Abcde before! One of those names you’d have no idea what to do with if the mom’s not there to tell you how to pronounce it. I always though it sounded like a weird combination of “abstinence” and “absinthe.”
