The social security administration has released the stats for top 1000 names of 2008.  Chloe and Alexander made it into the top 10, both leapfrogging multiple places.  Emma usurped Emily for top honors on the girls’ side.  Jacob still holding strong to number one for the tenth year.

Let’s reconvene later to compare results.  Can’t wait!

They’ve added a new section showing the change in popularity from 2007 to 2008. That’s handy to have.
In my state, California, Emma is #8 with our top 3 being Isabella, Emily and Sophia in that order. I haven’t even compared the boys lists yet.

You can see the whole list of 1000 names if you go to this link:

http://ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

Type it out if you can’t click on the link. Once you are on the site, select “Top 1000″ and “2008″ and click “Go”. Duh, I know, but I found it a bit unwieldy at first.

Striking is the skyrocketing Audrina, a character on “The Hills”. From a complete absense on the 2006 list, she was suddenly #707 in 2007 and a stellar #353 in 2008. Spencer, who by 2008 was an undisputed villain on the show, dropped to #191 in 2008, after being a bit higher up. Character Brody, son of Bruce Jenner and stepbrother to the Kardashians, catapulted to #70 in 2008, after being #’s 193, 148 and 105 in years 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively. And speaking Kardashian — look at Khloe’ jump from #665 in 2007 to #196 in 2008! I guess we can guess what the babynamers are doing in their free time.

I love the rank chart. That made following the changes so much easier.

Did anyone look at twins names? I can’t believe that there are 14 sets of twins running around named Heaven and Nevaeh. Seriously?

I know, the twin names can be awful.

ALl of the Jayda / Jayden combinations made me cringe.

Most of my favourite names didn’t rank in the top 1000 at all, which is lovely. Clementine isn’t there, neither is Adele. :)
