The Octuplets' Names!

February 10th, 2009

baby

Here it is!  The moment you’ve all been waiting for.  OK, maybe not.  But today, after much cajoling and plenty of dough, the names of those octuplets have finally been released.

Maliah - see below

Noah- Hebrew, “comfort”

Jonah- Hebrew, “dove”

Isaiah- Hebrew, “God helps me”

Nariah -see below

Jeremiah- Hebrew, “the Lord exalts”

McCai (may be spelled Makai)- see below

Josiah- Hebrew, “God supports”

Most are Biblical and rather lovely, no?  As a big proponent of meanings, I think they were carefully chosen for this special brood.  McCai in this form was unfamiliar to me.   It appears to be a McSpelling of Micaiah, Hebrew for “who is like Y_hweh?”  The names of the girls gave me pause as well.  Maliah may be a variant of the red hot Malia, which is Hawaiian for Mary.  It also may be a contraction of Mahaliah, “tenderness.”  Neriah is found in the Bible as a man, though by process of elimination I’m tempted to think this is one of the two girls.  It means “lamp of Y_hweh.”  Nera is a Hebrew girl’s name for “candlelight.”  All the children share the middle name of Angel, and their surname is Solomon.

If that doesn’t yet have you twitterpated, check out these other multiples, carefully compiled by Paige.

What their other six siblings are called I sadly cannot tell you.

If you were to be, um, blessed with eight at once, what would you name them?  I’m afraid I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to use Octavia or Octavian for the last born.  The other names could then be chosen accordingly.  What about:

Antonia

Vita

Julius

Felix

Lucius

Constantine

Urban

Octavian

  1. Lola Says:

I actually don’t mind their names and while I think their mom has a few issues that need to be worked out before those little darlings come home, she did a pretty okay job naming them. (I wish the Mcspelling was different but that’s it, really)

If I had 8? (After I passed out, I’d name them:

    Cosmo
    Rufus
    Remy
    Barnaby
    Maud
    Ottilie
Clementine or just Cleo? Not sure yet.
    Winifred

  2. Erin Says:

Does anyone know what her other six children’s names are?

  3. coolteamblt Says:

I have to say, I’m not impressed, but I don’t mind either. I don’t like the girls’ names at all, and McCai sticks out like a sore thumb.

If I had eight babies, I would go with:

    Dexter Michael
    Theo Calder
    Gideon Ernest
    Hugo Eric
    Dean Alan
    Asher Brett
    Sylvia Margaret
    Daphne Jane

I would be in so much trouble if I had to agree with my husband, though. Maybe that’s the real reason she had those kids by herself!

  4. Erin Says:

If I had octuplets, for argument’s sake let’s say four boys and four girls, I would go with:

    Girls:
    August
    Brett
    Kimber
    Quincy

    Boys:
    Bowie
    March
    Rex
    Tate

  5. Christina Fonseca Says:

    Melina Belén
    Felicity Katarina
Juan Carlos – use both names
Jose Luis – use both names
    Benjamín Joseph
    Matthew Armando
    Eric Steven
    Liam Alejandro

  6. Sara Says:

I got this bit from strollerderby.com

“- KTLA has the names of her other six children: 7-year-old Elijah Makai Solomon (boy), 6-year-old Amerah Yasmeen Solomon (girl), 5-year-old Joshua Jacob Solomon (boy), 3-year-old Aidan Solomon (boy), 2-year-old Calyssa Arielle Solomon (girl, twin), 2-year-old Caleb Kai Solomon (boy, twin)”

I thought it was interesting/strange that her first born has the middle name ‘Makai’, another one the middle name ‘Kai’ and now another ‘Makai’ (I’m assuming the Mc- is a misspelling after seeing these.)

Her girl choices (including the older kids) are a little much for me, but I think she did an ok job with boy names. One of the octuplets has my son’s name. So that was a good one, anyway. :)

  7. Sofia Says:

    I think I’d go with:

    Theodore “Theo”
    Hugh
    Edmund “Ned”
    Henry “Hank”
    Charles “Charlie”
    Owen
    Ivy
    Eleanor “Nora”

  8. Nicole Says:

    Dashiell Rudolph
    Frederic Charles
    Sebastien James
    Annabelle Bronwen
    Evangeline Eleanor
    Augustin Edward
    Bernard Louis
    Laurence John

  9. Alicia Says:

I actually love the names she used, but I’d change McCai to Micaiah, and Malia to Mahalia, and Neriah to Neviah.

    If I had 8, I’d use:
    Keturah
    Jonas
    Ezra
    Abram
    Atarah
    Saul
    Malachi
    Thaddeus

  10. azulverde Says:

way too monotonous! and has anyone thought about the confusion in her house when she calls one of them? my sister and i have names with similar endings and frequently get mixed up about who exactly my mom is calling for, imagine with 8! (well 7, mccai got lucky in that sense)

  11. Jessica Says:

    Catherine
    Margaret
    Elizabeth
    Alice

I want to play! Simple first names, gimmicky middles. I’m assuming the birth order is the same as the list of names.

    Maret Primrose
    August Kato
    Calvin Trey
    Frederick Anan
    Lila Quincy
    Theo Sixtus
    Joel Shichirou
    Bram Octavian

There are a lot of imaginary baby Theos here – wonder if it will be the new Milo….

  18. NWmom Says:

    How about:

    Parents
    Completely
    Insane
    Send
    Therapy
    Funds
    Optional
    Medication

    …Angel Solomon

    Because? Holy. Doodle.

  19. Mummie Says:

Following the six boys/two girls template, I might name them:

    Joshua
    Thomas
    Felix

    Jemima
    Esther
    Phoebe
    Octavia :)

  22. Natalie Says:

Don’t love the octuplets names but I guess it could have been worse.
    I would have chosen:
    Isaac James
    Archer William
    Penn Robert
    Jude Lysander

    Ivy Hero
    Eliza Rose
    Daphne Margaret

    Edwin Barnaby Hugh
    Violet Clara Elisabeth
    Caspar Dane Linus
    Orlando Ellis Ambrose
    Jane Florence Isabelle
    Frederick Gervaise Leopold
    Simon Ivo Octavian

  26. Emmy Jo Says:

Overall, I’m pleasantly surprised by the names she chose. The biblical boys’ names are wonderful. As far as made-up names go, Maliah and Neriah aren’t bad. I’m a bit thrown by McCai — it’s obviously the odd-one-out. You do a great job of explaining possible derivations for the three unfamiliar ones.

If I were to have eight children today(six boys and two girls), they would be:
    Clara Anneliese
    Eleanor Joy
    Julius Aubrey
    Gideon Daniel
    Caleb Arthur
    Edward Alasdair
    Frederick Simeon
    Wesley Benjamin

With the exception of Aubrey and Alasdair, the middle names come from family members.

  27. JKN Says:

As an aside– Nadya Suleman is Arab (an Arab Christian, I believe). Her children’s names are biblical + Arabic (i.e. Amirah, Yasmeen) + trendy.

    I want to play!

    Antoine Gregory Laurence
    Lucian Wolfe
    Sebastian Gerard
    Cyprian Stavros

    Raphaela Benedikte
    Noémie Ambrosine
    Mary Sophronia
    Noor Evangeline

    Kyle Xavior
    Emmett Charles
    Theo Justin

    LOL i love these names!!

  29. tilly Says:

I know I’m a serious latecomer here, but I just want to say that if I had to name eight kids at once (much less take care of them), I’d be seriously bummed if only two of them were girls. So depressed I can’t even bring myself to come up with the names.

  60. youcantcallitit Says:

You’re such a tease, Pam! I thought you were going to give us your secret list!

  67. Amanda Says:

Honestly I dont think she really is a bad mother….if I could I probably would like 8 babies at the same time so I dont have to wait as long to have a big family.

  68. Amanda Says:

    cute… I like those

  69. Mookie Says:

Knowing that it takes over 100 thousand dollars to raise one child was enough to knock me down from wanting four kids, to wanting three. On the average family’s salary, you’re lucky to get 50 thousand a year! Not to mention house payments, car payments, food, schooling, clothes, and all the extras. I won’t hate on her, but I do think she has some sort of mental problem. She, as one person, cannot raise eight infants and six other children alone! She was crazy to go through with voluntarily planting seven (I believe) eggs into her uterus, knowing full well that that many and more could be conceived! I’d have more sympathy if they were naturally conceived, but each and every one of her kids she paid to get implanted in her, and she opts to have that many when she’s alone and unemployed?! Not to mention that, if she didn’t get so much face time, it’d be us American civilians paying for her family out of our paychecks and our wallets through taxes, which go straight to families like hers. Paying for fourteen kids one woman was crazy enough to have? I’m not buying it!

    /rant.

  70. Mookie Says:

Okay, now that my outburst is over, I’ll be happy to give a name-related comment. :)

The names themselves, alone, mainly aren’t that bad. I’ll admit I expected much worse. I was expecting Makynli, Nevaeh, Kennedy, Braedyn, Jaedynn, and Kaydinne to come popping out of her womb, so in comparison, her brood is spectacular. But without comparing, and all grouped together, the names are a matchy-matchy trainwreck. Josiah and Jeremiah and Nariah and Maliah? The names sound almost exactly alike give or take the first few syllables!

If I were to have octuplets (good lord), two boys and six girls (for the sake of my sanity… I only have two good boy names I’m willing to use), I would name them:

    • James Daniel “Jamie”
    • Archer Leonard “Archie”
    • Lydia Karen “Libby”
    • Caroline Susanna “Cara”
    • Evangeline Margaret “Eva”
    • Beatrix Anita “Trilly”
    • Romilly Angela “Romy”
    • Isadora Leah “Izzy”

Jamie, Archie, Libby, Cara, Eva, Trilly, Romy, and Izzy! <3

  71. Kate Says:

    My babies name would be:

    Viva
    Bebe
    Posy
    Taggie

    Otto
    Henry
    James
    Hamilton

  72. Couldn't resist playing! Says:

Presuming I had six boys and two girls, they would be:

    Ophelia
    Seraphina
    Adrian
    Raphael
    Isidore
    Lysander
    Emanuel
    Cornelius

  73. sarah Says:

if 2 girls and 6 boys
    Olivia Niamh

    Olivia
    Leaha
    Taylor
